The tailored Temperley classic is back in two new colourways
With its effortless blend of masculine tailoring, feminine silhouette and fabric, the Clove suit exemplifies Alice’s playful, fluid attitude.
To create the Clove, Alice drew on her love of suiting and extensive personal suit collection (20 suits and counting). The result is an immaculately tailored trio: blazer, waistcoat and trousers, all in luxurious Italian velvet.
Fully lined, with button detailing, the pieces can be worn together as a matching three-piece suit for a modern take on tailoring, or split up and worn as separates, for a truly unique look.
Since the suit launched AW19, it’s been a repeat sell-out whenever it’s reintroduced. From whimsical purple (a nod to Jimi Hendrix) to fierce, limited-edition crimson red, it still looks as fresh as ever.
For spring-summer 2022, Temperley launches Clove in two new colourways: rust and mustard. The new-season updates will launch on Tuesday 8th March, or International Women’s Day. Alice chose the launch date to underscore everything the suit symbolizes: empowerment, freedom from traditional gender restraints, feminism, equality and overcoming bias.
It’s a landmark time for suiting, with Savile Row beginning to reflect the zeitgeist. The first female-only tailoring house opened in 2020, and women are finally being liberated from the back rooms and taking on front-of-house roles, like head cutter.
Here, Alice describes the origins of the Clove suit – and shares what suiting a woman means to her…
Where did the idea for the Clove suit come from?
‘Everyone thinks I am a dress person, but I love tailoring. It began with a vintage men’s three-piece suit from Endell Street, which I used to style with a pair of Converse again and again through college. It was a revelation. Since then, my collection has grown to twenty which I wear on rotation, so it makes sense as a key story in every collection.
‘Though the Clove has a tomboy edge, the velvet gives it a feminine and flattering feel when worn with heels or flats. It’s versatile – I like to wear my waistcoat and jackets over dresses, as well as together.’
How do you feel when you wear a suit?
‘I feel my most confident in a suit. It’s so simple – you don’t have to think about anything else as it’s a head-to-toe look. Yet when done right, you instantly look put-together.’
What does creating women’s suits mean to you?
‘Since we shifted our business model to be direct-to-consumer, we’re able to listen more to what our clients want – and our clients love suits.
‘It feels important to give women the freedom and easy confidence that comes from intuitive, well-cut suiting. As with all my designs, I wear them constantly, so it’s amazing to see others enjoying them and making them their own.’
20% from every sale of the Clove tailoring story between 8th - 31st March will go to Women for Women International, who help women survivors of war and conflict to rebuild their lives. Alice has been an ambassador for Women for Women International since 2015.
