Styled and shot on a Temperley muse from the recent runway show, the Autumn 19 takes inspiration from both traditional and avant-garde aspects of Japanese design and culture.
References include Katagami stencilsused for dyeing fabrics and Sashiko, a form of decorative reinforcement stitching. 1930’s woodblock prints and the posters and matchboxes of the infamous graphic designer, Tadanori Yokoo, contribute to the narrative this season.
Samurai inspired wide leg trousers and relaxed kimono jackets in varying volumes reflect the Eastern silhouette. Printed fabric obi belts create the signature cinched silhouette.
The motif of the season, the Cyclamen, the sacred flower of love in Japan, features throughout in both embroidery and print form. The muted colour palette of khakis, denim blues, apricots, and black is punctuated by pops of poppy, flamingo and fuchsia.
The collection is abundant in shape, colour, print and details which cumulates with eveningwear. Geometric framework created with contrast ribbon borders and sequin latticework reflect the simplicity found in Japanese screens. Degrade sequins, satin stitch embroidery and trompe l’oeil tassels offer opulence and texture. With an overriding sense of calm refinement, Autumn 19 is a celebration of craft and culture.
